Layer Translator is a real tool
LAYTRANS renames layers, merges many into one, and forces object properties back to ByLayer - for free, inside AutoCAD, with no account. For a source you have already mapped, it is fast and reliable. Nothing on this page argues that it is broken.
It matches layers one way: by exact name, from a translation table (.dws) you build by hand. "Map Same" auto-pairs layers whose names are already identical. Everything else you pair yourself, once per layer, once per source.
Where the table goes quiet
A table only knows the names you put in it. The moment a drawing arrives with a name it has no entry for, Layer Translator has nothing to say:
- A new consultant sends
A-WALL-FULLwhere your table expectsA-WALL. - An Italian office sends
MURI,PARETI,INFISSI. - Someone renames
M-DUCTtoMECH-DUCT-SUPmid-project.
Each of those is a manual pairing. Take files from ten sources and you maintain ten tables - and rebuild them every time a name drifts. The work LAYTRANS saves on known layers, it hands straight back on the unknown ones.
MorphoCAD maps by meaning
MorphoCAD reads what a layer is for, not how it is spelled. MURI, PARETI, A-WALL, WAND and DUVAR all resolve to your wall layer because the AI recognizes the concept - across 7 languages, plus the abbreviations, typos, and house jargon that real drawings are full of.
You do not build a table. Pick your standard (AIA, ISO 13567, or your own), run MORPHO, and review the proposed mapping in a window inside AutoCAD: every row scored for confidence, every row editable. Nothing changes until you click Apply, and the whole run is a single Ctrl+Z.
Approve a mapping once and it is kept. The next file from that source resolves those layers instantly, with no AI call - and on a team plan, so do your colleagues' files. That is what compounds: a .dws is only as current as the last time someone updated it by hand; Cloud Memory gets sharper every time anyone on the team approves a fix.

When Layer Translator is the right tool
Receive drawings from one or two stable sources whose naming never changes? Build the .dws once and LAYTRANS will serve you well - free, offline, no subscription. Need an apply engine and nothing more? It is already on your Manage tab. MorphoCAD earns its place when the inputs vary: many sources, shifting conventions, other languages, layers you have never seen.
What MorphoCAD does not do
It needs an internet connection and an account - the mapping AI and Cloud Memory are cloud services, not an offline tool. It is assistive, not unattended: it scores every suggestion and leaves anything below the threshold, or genuinely ambiguous, unmapped for you to decide. It sends only layer metadata - layer names, block names, short text snippets - never geometry or coordinates. It runs on AutoCAD on Windows, 2019 through 2026.
How a run works
- Pick the standard template you map to.
- Run
MORPHO. It reads every layer, including layers inside blocks and xrefs. - Review the Mapping Window: confidence scores, editable targets, low-confidence rows left unmapped.
- Apply. Layers are renamed, merged, recolored, and re-linetyped in one transaction.
- Your corrections save to Cloud Memory for next time.
FAQ
Does Layer Translator really have no memory?
No - and any page that says so is wrong. LAYTRANS saves mappings to a .dws you can reuse and share. The honest difference is that the table is static and built by hand; MorphoCAD's memory accumulates on its own and shares across the team as people work.
Can MorphoCAD merge layers and force ByLayer like LAYTRANS? Yes. Merges, renames, and ByLayer cleanup apply in one reviewed transaction with a single undo.
What happens to a layer the AI is not sure about? It is left unmapped rather than guessed. Below-threshold and genuinely ambiguous names wait for your decision in the Mapping Window.
Do I have to drop Layer Translator? No. Some teams keep LAYTRANS for one or two fixed sources and use MorphoCAD for everything that varies.
Does my drawing get uploaded? Only layer names, block names, and short text snippets are sent for mapping. No geometry or coordinates leave your machine.
Which standards can it map to? AIA / NCS, ISO 13567, or a custom template you define from one of your own drawings.
